ABOUT |
Steve Babineau grew up in Cambridge,
MA with a passion for sports. While participating in highschool
hockey and baseball, and later semi-pro baseball, Steve took
up sports photography as a hobby. An avid fan of Bobby Orr
and the Big Bad Bruins, he started bringing his camera to
Bruins games with a dream of one day becoming team photographer.
Steve's first break came in 1972, when The
Hockey News credentialed him to photograph games of the World
Hockey Association. Soon, Steve's photos were seen on hockey
cards and on the covers of other publications, such as Hockey
Digest. One of Steve's most famous published photographs is
Wayne Gretzky's rookie card, produced by the Topps Company.
In 1978 Steve's dream came true when the
Bruins hired him as their color photographer, a position he
now shares with his son, Brian. In 1980 Steve expanded to
Major League Baseball when he became a staff photographer
for the Fleer Baseball Card Company, a position he held for
14 years.
Steve does charity work for the Bridge School
in Hillsbourough CA, a school for physically challenged children,
which was founded by rock icon Neil Young, and his wife Pegi.
Steve's library of Neil Young photographs boasts more than
5,000 images and dates back to 1970. He sells a limited edition
series of photographs of Neil in concert which are signed
by Neil, and another collection of photographs, 8x10 photos
that are sold unsigned. All the proceeds from Neil Young photographs
are donated to the Bridge School. To date, Steve has raised
over $82,000 dollars with this project.
Sports Action Photography has become one
of the largest suppliers of hockey photography in the world.
Steve works with a number of NHL photographers in marketing
their pictures through his company.
Brian Babineau started shooting with his
father while still a junior in high school in 1993-4. In his
first year photographing the Boston Bruins in the Garden,
his photos graced the covers of The Hockey News, The Sporting
News, hockey cards, posters, magazines and the cover of the
1994 EA Sports Hockey PC game box when he was only 16. Today
Steve and Brian are the Team Photographers for the Boston
Bruins, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Manchester Monarchs
